Carmax valued my car at $2500. Well damn. So much for “show me the carfax” being worth a shit. Still have a few avenues left for getting rid of this thing short of dodging pelicans into a lake. Going to frankly ask my boss if he knew about any of this when I bought the car. If he did then he can consider that my two week notice. On the plus side, got two possibilities for less-toxic jobs, one at a networking and IT infrastructor contractor, and another at Carmax (apparently they jump at the chance to hire someone from another dealership... go figure). Also going to apply at Geek Squad/Best Buy. I just hope they don’t require a degree or anything. I was looking around and people require a degree for basic tier 1 tech support crap, which is utterly idiotic.

The damage noted on the autocheck was unibody damage. The damage found by the Carmax inspection was: front fender and door replaced, rear fender repaired, hood repaired, bumper support repaired, unibody repaired. The damage noted on the Carfax was “never been in an accident”. Sigh.

This is why I never get carfaxes. All of them except 2 that I've ever gotten have been confirmed wrong.

The last time I ran a Carfax on my car it said it’s had no accidents. I know it’s been in one, because I was in the car when it got rear ended.

Same. I specifically took my previous vehicle to a repair shop that I knew wouldn’t send anything to CarFax when I was rear-ended.

When I started my IT career, I interviewed for Geek Squad. They turned me down due to lack of experience. Two weeks later I was a desktop technician for Ball Aerospace; gaining more experience and usable skills than GS could have possibly offered.

My experience up to that point was repairing electronics (TVs, computers, stereos, the like) including PCB soldering both through-hole and surface mount components, teaching computer classes and managing networks. GS said I wasn’t good enough. Glad I dodged that bullet :)

Carfax is like Kelley Blue Book and Autocheck is more NADA. The former is for the pleasure of making the consumer feel confident, the latter is more realistic to dealers. You have been trained by marketing to see the Carfax, but dealers know to look at both. I have to say I have never seen Autocheck miss something shown on Carfax.

My best friend went to trade in his Civic for a new car. The dealership came back with a Carfax that showed it had been an accident during the time he owned it in another state. The car had also never been in that state or an accident since he purchased it brand new. It really screwed him out of about $2K in trade-in value.

Yeah, my car has a clean Carfax, and yet has had the hood and front bumper replaced, both rear quarter-panels repaired, the trunk lid replaced, the rear bumper replaced (twice). There’s a bit of accident history there.
